Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani (UNJANI) grew out of several colleges coordinated by the Higher Education Institute (LEMDIKTI) of the Kartika Eka Paksi Foundation (YKEP), established by Decree of the General Chairman of the Kartika Eka Paksi Foundation No. 027/YKEP/1990 dated 20 May 1990. UNJANI was formally established by Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0512/0/1990 dated 9 August 1990. The Bandung College of Technology was integrated into Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani by Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0124/0/1992 dated 2 March 1992.

As early as 1987, well before UNJANI was founded, preparations had begun to establish a School of Medicine together with Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD). After UNJANI was established, these efforts continued more intensively with UNPAD and the Region IV West Java Private Higher Education Coordinator (KOPERTIS) to establish a Faculty of Medicine, approved by the Coordinator of KOPERTIS Region IV West Java on 21 July 1991 (No. 143/KopIV/1991).

The Medical Education Study Program under the Faculty of Medicine, UNJANI, was confirmed by Decree of the Director General of Higher Education on behalf of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 45/D/0/1993 dated 20 April 1993, granting registered status to the Medical Education Study Program at the undergraduate (S1) level. Although the first cohort of students was admitted in October 1992, the anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine, UNJANI, is set on the date its establishment was confirmed by the Director General of Higher Education: 20 April 1993.

The Medical Education Study Program was accredited “B” and received an extension of its operating permit from the Director General of Higher Education under BAN-PT Decree No. 028/BAN-PT/Ak-XIII/S1/XI/2010 dated 26 November 2010, valid until 2015. Since its founding, the medical curriculum at Unjani used the Semester Credit System (SKS) based on KIPDI I and KIPDI II. From the 2007/2008 academic year, it has implemented a competency-based curriculum (KBK) based on the Standards of Professional Medical Education and the Standards of Physician Competence.
