FK Unjani and Cimahi City Government Collaborate to Strengthen Disaster Preparedness

CIMAHI — Strengthening the health sector's disaster preparedness requires two things working hand in hand: clear planning and the ability to act when an emergency occurs. This was the focus of a collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani (FK Unjani), the Cimahi City Government, and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) through a community service activity on Tuesday, 11 August 2026.

The activity was attended by 129 participants: 30 participants in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Disaster Contingency Strategy and 99 participants in earthquake simulation and Basic Life Support (BLS) training. The series of activities was designed to strengthen the preparedness of the health sector, from mapping risks and needs to practicing for emergency situations.

During the FGD session at the Hall of Building B of the Cimahi City Government, participants discussed health-sector contingency strategies with speakers from BNPB. Berton Suar Pelita Panjaitan, SKM, MHM, Ph.D., Director of Early Warning at BNPB Indonesia, presented on policy and the preparation of regency/city-level contingency plans. The material on health contingency plans was delivered by Dr. Bagus Tjahjono, dr., M.P.H., Principal Expert Trainer at BNPB. The FGD was opened by the Head of Disease Prevention and Control of the Cimahi City Health Office, dr. Lina Mulyani, M.M.

The discussion focused on identifying risks, capacities, needs, the division of roles, and cross-sector coordination. Through this process, participants and speakers formulated recommendations and a follow-up plan to strengthen the health-sector contingency strategy of Cimahi City.

The preparedness designed through planning was then reinforced through training. A total of 99 participants took part in the earthquake simulation and BLS training. The activity was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Unjani, Dr. Iis Inayati Rakhmat, dr., M.Kes., and the Regional Secretary of Cimahi City, Dr. Maria Fitriana, S.Sos., M.M. Before the training, participants took a pre-test to measure their initial knowledge.

Material on earthquake preparedness in healthcare facilities was delivered by dr. Glen Glady Prakasa, M.M.B. Participants then received BLS material and demonstrations, followed by hands-on practice at skill stations. A scenario-based earthquake evacuation simulation was also conducted so that participants could apply their knowledge and skills in conditions resembling a real emergency.

The results were evaluated through a pre-test and post-test to assess changes in knowledge, as well as observation of practical skills by facilitators. This evaluation is part of an effort to ensure that preparedness does not stop at theoretical understanding but can be put into action.

Through the series of FGDs, BLS training, and evacuation simulations, FK Unjani, together with the Cimahi City Government and BNPB, brought together planning and practical readiness. The collaboration is expected to support capacity building in Cimahi's health sector for emergencies and disasters. The collaboration between FK Unjani, the Cimahi City Government, and BNPB is an example of synergy between an educational institution, local government, and a disaster management agency to strengthen the capacity of the health sector. For a medical school, involvement in strengthening disaster preparedness is also part of implementing the Tridharma of Higher Education, particularly through community service. Through this activity, FK Unjani seeks to contribute not only to education and science, but also to building the capacity of communities and health workers to be better prepared for emergencies.
